Smith Tower was dedicated in February 1965 as retirement living for senior citizens. Although the architectural style is now considered quite dated, it once was thought of as being very modern. In front are the brick arches that mark the beginning of Main Street. Vancouver architecture features many, many arch designs.  When the convenience store across the street was built, the sign was mistakenly hung upside down. Residents are so used to it that when the sign was recently replaced, the new one was installed….upside-down.
